The Defense Department asked Selective Service for 53,000 draftees in February, the largest manpower levy in almost two years, all for the Army. Navy Marine Corps and Air Force keep to volunteer programs. Since September 1950, 30,000 draftees have been called, with peak monthly inductions around 80,000 in early 1951.
A tame mountain lion at an Gardena animal farm attacked 6 year old Mary Lynne Baddin of Hawthorne, gouging wounds requiring 16 stitches. Owner J H Kerr said the lion, named Bud, is normally tame but notes children and a hero neighbor, Tissier Meare, helped pull the child from the animal.
A tropical storm with 36 mile per hour winds at center churns across the Pacific toward the Philippine Islands. The Weather Bureau reported the storm was 600 miles east of Mindanao Island, indicating a potential landfall path and possible impacts on maritime routes.
Taegu Korea Friday night fire damaged three blocks injuring seven people including four American soldiers who fought the blaze. Two thousand Korean civilians were left homeless and a severly burned civilian was reported as the blaze threatened a Fifth Air Force fuel supply before control was regained.
