National Gallery Acquires Manet Work Le Chemin de Fer
The National Gallery of Art in Washington received a Manet painting titled Le Chemin de Fer as a bequest from the late Horace Havemeyer. The work, created between 1872 and 1874, depicts a seated woman and a girl watching a passing locomotive. Havemeyer's gift honors his mother Louisine W. Havemeyer, who collected impressionist works and donated Manet pieces to the Met.
