Court OKs Conviction for Osteopath
The District Court of Appeals in Los Angeles upheld the conviction of Long Beach osteopath Dr. Bruce A. Mackewing on two abortion charges. The ruling, issued unanimously, also affirmed Sam E. Hewitt’s conviction on the same charges. Hewitt was accused of referring the abortion patient to Mackewing. After a January 15 conviction, Mackewing received a two to five year state prison sentence and was freed on 10,000 bail pending appeal. Hewitt was fined 500 and placed on probation by Superior Judge Joseph M. Manby. Attorneys for both defendants plan to seek Supreme Court review, arguing no corroborating evidence supported the victim’s testimony.
