Cop Saves Family From Gale Drifts At Cabrillo Beach
Officer Robert Ernst of the LAPD petrol boat swam hundreds of feet through dark, turbulent water to secure lines on the Nomad as high winds pushed the 33 foot sailboat toward piling. He attached a rifle to a piling and freed the Clark family and Bud Hammer, later rescued by a Coast Guard patrol boat at dawn. The Clarks Dale and Mildred, with children Serena and Gregory, lived aboard Nomad. Hammer helped install a diesel engine. A seasick cat added to the ordeal.
