Christmas Day VA status change for WWI veteran Hasse
Milwaukee veteran Bill Hasse, 36, a World War I veteran blinded in 1944, has worked temporarily for the Veterans Administration since June 25 and will become permanent on Christmas Day. He previously studied law, ran a private practice, and now assists about 15 veterans daily with forms and interviews using Braille aids. Elizabeth Schmidtecker, a Bavarian refugee, arrives in New York Harbor aboard a transport and will stay with relatives in Chicago. A Philadelphia deli owner decorates a large tree with a sign pledging it for the homeless and Christmas joy. Miss Christmas, a Lawrenceville teacher, continues her themed greetings and autographed photos for students plus a growing mail list.
