Battleship New Jersey to Mothball in Retirement
The 45,000 ton battleship New Jersey sails from Norfolk toward Bayonne to join the mothball fleet after six years in service with the United Nations force in Korea. Officers and crew, about 1,200 on board, lament retirement while noting the ship could be modernized for future missile roles as air power dominates naval warfare.
