CIO third party proposal vetoed at convention
At the CIO convention in Los Angeles Michael J. Quill urged forming a third national party but CIO President Walter Reuther rejected the idea saying it would not work. Quill warned that unions risk becoming tied to the Democratic Party as Harriman’s nomination showed Tammany influence. Reuther stressed a realignment toward both parties and noted regional shifts in support. A wage guarantee resolution was expected to be adopted and CIO economists projected modest 1955 improvements to bolster wage gains, possibly via strikes.
