Vicksburg residents face freezing weather as rescue crews hunt for tornado victims. The death toll climbs with at least 30 dead, dozens hospitalized, and 274 homes destroyed plus 29 more damaged. Civil defense, National Guardsmen, and Red Cross report extensive damage totaling about 23 million dollars.
The White House reports 17 628 telegrams plus a resume of mail as public support for Sen. McCarthy’s call to halt U S aid to nations trading with Communist China grows. China's Chou En Lai delivered a broadcast speech to the United Nations General Assembly accusing the United States of obstructing a Korea peace plan and endangering a ceasefire. He called for repatriation of war prisoners and warned that U N inaction could heighten international tension. He charged U S subversion and said the peace talks have stalled.
Presiding Superior Judge Ray mond H Thompson upheld the dismissal of Boyd Allen Hershey as police chief. The ruling denied his bid for a civil service board hearing, finding he did not timely request one after city officials cited inefficiency and known gambling issues.
A 26 year old Santa Ana Gardens resident died attempting to rescue his wife and infant son from a blazing trailer at 15901 Golden West Street. Firefighters pulled the mother and child to safety. both were in very serious condition at Santa Ana Community Hospital. The victim, Edward Cardavas, reportedly stayed to help but perished as flames swept through the trailer.
LOS ANGELES ICE Leon ard Satchwell and his dog Panda thwart a gunman who jumped into Satchwell s car at Broadway and 165th St demanding money. The dog in the back seat leaped up, struck the intruder s arm breaking the pistol from his grip, and the bandit fled. Satchwell, 39, told police.
William D. Cluff a 56 year old Hollywood based owner of Western Chemical & Manufacturing Co was killed when he tried to aid a Marine being attacked by a gang of youths in downtown Los Angeles. Police detained several suspects and ordered an autopsy to determine cause of death.
A chartered plane with six men aboard is missing in northeastern Quebec. Canadian Air Force Search and Rescue headquarters said the craft disappeared after leaving Ross Lake Sunday night for the 180 mile flight to Seven Islands, Quebec.
Forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of drizzle tonight and clearing Tuesday. Little temperature change expected.
President Eisenhower plans a dramatic UN General Assembly speech in New York to urge Western nations Britain’s Churchill and France’s Laniel support a new approach to disarmament and atomic control amid a seven year Soviet Western deadlock. The address titled Perils That Confront the World In This Atomic Age will be carried by major networks.
UNITED NATIONS India and Western powers reach a plan for an indefinite recess of the General Assembly with no debate on the Korean peace conference. President Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit would reconvene when Korean developments justify action, with a majority vote. No specific date is set.
