New Defenses Set Up Above 38th Parallel
Tokyo Dec 7 CAP All lied troops braced on a new hill defense line 25 miles south of fallen Pyongyang as a stand against advancing Chinese Red expeditionary forces. The line stretched inland 70 miles in northwest Korea from the Yellow Sea. It was a defense in depth on commanding heights and not a solid line. U S Eighth Army, after a long retreat, was outnumbered but fought on. Chinese forces were estimated at 100000 with large reserves behind them and more moving from Manchuria. The Eighth Army strength on the line was just under 110000. Northeast of the line Marines and doughboys battled a blizzard to break from Red traps south of Changjin reservoir. They broke one trap but faced another. The withdrawal of the American garrison from Wonsan underscored the UN peril near the reservoir. Three destroyers bombarded the port and shore fire by South Korean Marines covered the pull out. Wonsan had been captured earlier by South Korean troops. The same Marines trapped at Changjin landed at the port after a week sweep of a minefield offshore. Hamhung and Hungnam become the Allies main northern escape route, more centrally located.

Ashland editor calls for Vishinsky arrest over UN remarks

Chapple, editor of the Ash and Ogily Press in Ashland Wisconsin, demanded the arrest of Andrei Vishinsky charging him with inciting mutiny in armed forces after labeling Gen Douglas MacArthur a war maniac in a U N General Assembly address. A Czech Communist, Vavro Hajdu, said any demand to Chinese Reds would have only platonic value amid rapid UN retreat in Korea. Vishinsky rejected Syria's Faris El Khoury appeal to drop his opposition and let the committee proceed.
