Long Beach marks SD Day with minor traffic toll reported
Long Beach reached half of SD Day at noon with mainly light traffic. A 20 year old Navy man Donald L Simmons of USS Haven died in a hasty crash into the San Gabriel River flood channel after his car left the E 2nd St bridge near Appian Way. He was treated at Veterans Administration Hospital then Naval Dispensary on Terminal Island. National totals showed 15 deaths by noon in the eastern belt with Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan among others reporting fatalities. Other early SD Day fatalities included a 44 year old Robert M Johnson of Centerville Ind killed near Richmond, and 27 year old sailor Gerald LaGrow of Detroit area killed by a truck in Illinois.

Navy diver trapped 130 feet below Patuxent River surface
A Navy diver is trapped 130 feet down in the Patuxent River near Solomons Maryland while five divers race from Washington to attempt a rescue. Severe cold and rough water impeded efforts at the scene a quarter mile offshore where the river meets Chesapeake Bay. The diver worked for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory facility. officials would not disclose his exact duties or how he became trapped.

Long Beach Receives First Batch of New 3-Digit 3-Letter Plates
The Long Beach DMV office announced the initial shipment of California s new three-letter three-number license plates. Commercial vehicle owners begin today, private autos start January 3, with two plates per vehicle except trailers and motorcycles. About 206,000 plates will be issued locally and through banks and auto clubs. The 1956 plates measure 6 by 12 inches with three black digits on a yellow background, and Long Beach plates range from HTZ 000 to HWA 999. The 1958 plates will be kept until 1961, with annual tabs 1957 through 1960.
