Navy Secretary Dan Kimball reaffirmed plans to transfer more ships to Long Beach making it a home port. He told Rep. Clyde Doyle that more ships are coming than previously indicated and noted studies of increased supply facilities in the Long Beach Los Angeles area. A Navy spokesman said the San Pedro Naval Supply Depot Torrance annex and Naval Ammunition Depot are ready for additional ships. Doyle pressed for a site for a new Navy hospital, with a survey underway for a site over 135 acres to support expansion of the existing 350 bed facility. if federal land isn’t available, donations may be sought.
A two year old coast guard family boy died in Wilmington after a temper tantrum when candy was refused. Little George Lindsey Geiger collapsed and died at Wilmington Emergency Hospital with police calling the death accidental due to possible head blow or heart seizure. Survived by parents Mari and Glenn Geiger and siblings Joyce Irene and Edne. Funeral plans are pending at McNerney Mortuary.
United Press reports 31 year old Hiowers of Long Beach died in Nephi Utah from injuries suffered four weeks earlier when a truck ran over him as he assisted his brother Oliver move furniture at his Moroni home.
Threats to shipping and air transportation in the Long Beach area were averted as a tropical storm veered inland south of the border and dissipated. Fringing showers swept the Southland with heavy waves at Avalon anddaq lines moved. Navy ships prepared to sail, wires burned through a crossarm, and civil defense air raid sirens sounded briefly. Rain totals reached .14 inch locally. Needles reported 2.85 inches.
Long Beach placed 12th among cities with 200000 to 300000 population for traffic deaths in the first six months, Public Safety Magazine reports. The group average was 10.6 per 100000, while Long Beach recorded 15.6 per 300000.
In Santa Ana today the prosecution presented expert testimony alleging Henry McCracken abused 10 year old Patricia Hull before killing her last May 19. Criminologist Jack Cadman described findings on Patty's underclothing, claiming positive evidence of sexual molestation.
Student pilot Peier E. D. Terry, 23, of Compton, the lone survivor of a four passenger plane crash near Hanford, was listed in fair condition. The Stinson aircraft ran out of gas during an emergency landing in an alfalfa field, killing two student fliers and their instructor Joe Buzzi.
San Pedro police said a 15 year old boy died from a gunshot after a Russian roulette game at a friend's home. Richard N Kolberg and Darel examined a 38 caliber revolver as Carol Thomas Grahlam lay dead with a bullet in his right eye. Five unfired rounds and an empty shell remained by the bed.
The National Shipping Authority chief Charles H. McGuire said eighty five percent of the world’s merchant tonnage could be mobilized for the United States and allies in a full war. He told Long Beach officials that a vast pool of ships exists, with 1200 idle freighters potentially usable at a cost of 130000 to 150000 dollars each, plus 2,000,000 deadweight tons of foreign ships under the U.S. flag.
Eight people were injured in four traffic crashes during a rainy period. A 24 year old Norman Mayfield in critical condition after a rear end crash with a petroleum tanker trailer near Pacific Coast Hwy. and Ximeno Ave. A 23 year old Richard McAlister suffered head injuries. Patricia Ryan, 24, UCLA student, was cited but not hurt. A northbound car struck the dividing island on Long Beach Blvd near 66th St, injuring Merile Hughes, Phyllis Cole, and Navy Lt. John J. Long, all taken to Seaside Hospital or Naval facilities. Lois Rigg, 42, was injured at Pacific Coast Hwy and Oregon Ave. Leslie Miller, 50, was unhurt.
San Pedro resident Bill Pearcy a 1920s major league pitcher for the Yankees Red Sox and Cubs and Pacific Coast League clubs died of a heart attack at St Marys Hospital Long Beach. He led the CIO Marine Clerks Association in San Pedro for four years and served in wartime War Shipping Administration. He leaves a widow and two sons. Bonds valued at 125.2005 million were counted over two days by Violet Dovey for Mayor Burton W. Chace with deposits totaling 29 370 00 in bank securities. Count of bonds is at Security First National Bank.
Mrs. Mary Koenig of Mira Mar Avenue endures a year and a half of unsolicited deliveries ordered in her son Jo’s name. Goods arrive COD from radio to bed linens, muscle books, and mercurochrome as Bekins Van and three real estate agents were sent to her home. Authorities have not traced the prankster, and Koenig is described as five feet eight inches tall and burned in the affair.
