Porpoises Haunt Catalina Channel Swimmer Carmassi

San Francisco distance swimmer Ray Carmassi battled strong southwest currents as he neared the mainland in the Catalina Channel attempt. Escort boats reported a porpoise school circling him while winds favored speed, and Carmassi said he felt wonderful despite being about a mile from shore. A landing search began near Portuguese Bend as the flotilla continued to guide him.

Continued hot weather with a high around 92. Mostly clear tonight and Friday, with occasional light morning squalls. Skies expected to stay dry into the weekend as temperatures stay warm.

One Dead One Saved As Bait Boat Sinks Off L B

A 60 foot bait boat Crescent sank four miles off Huntington Beach at 12 45 a m. Sam Reno 25 deckhand died while skipper Barney Bartlett 54 was rescued after four hours in the water. Bartlett reported the craft listed rapidly and Reno leapt from the deck house into the sea. The boat settled and both men left for the open sea before signaling. Seasport 3 located the drifting skiff and wreckage about 3 30 a m. Coast Guard notified. private boats aided in the rescue effort.

Last Person to See St Peter Heart Stops 26 Minutes

Marcus G. Riddell, candy distributor, survived a 26 minute heart stoppage during a July 23 mitral valve operation in Philadelphia. He recovers at home with a newborn son and a fourth child. Doctors say massage restarted the heart and he expects to return to work within a year. His wife was unaware until after returning home.

A mail robbery in Victorville today lacked Old West drama as four road-riders stole sacks from a gondola car. A Summit brake man reported seeing sacks tossed from a train, noting four additional sacks were counted.

Hurricane teases stronger winds in Atlantic warning

A tropical hurricane, the season's first, drifted 260 miles north northwest of San Juan Puerto Rico. Moving west-northwest at 10 to 12 mph, it unleashed hurricane force winds of at least 75 mph in heavier squalls as authorities warned of its growing power.

US builds atomic air force to deter war says Finletter

Air Force Secretary Finletter told the American Legion convention the United States is constructing an atomic air armada to deter aggression, calling it a powerful peace force. He cited a strong defense posture but questioned heavy Air Force spending while promising a force wholly adequate for national protection. He also noted UN air victories in Korea and urged Navy support for strong sea forces to counter global aggression.

The California Federation of Labor convention refused to grant outright endorsement to the Democratic ticket led by Gov. Adlai Stevenson. It did commend the Labor League for Political Education for voting to support the Democrats. UN Planes Strike North Korea in Swarms

United Nations warplanes swarmed from the battleline to the Yalu River blasting Communist troop and supply concentrations with bombs and bullets. They destroyed two power plants near Haeju and Libon, with fires and explosions reported. F-51 Mustangs hit fuel tanks near Haeju, while MIG Alley was attacked up to the Yalu. ground action slowed, and navy bombers struck hydroelectric plants with 2000 pound bombs, all planes returning safely to carriers.

Rain Squall Briefly Dims Long Beach Heat

An August rain squall cooled Long Beach briefly with 0.46 inches reported and a trace the prior August. The weatherman explained the strange event as a tired night and morning of low clouds. By noon the temperature rose to about 92 expected to climb further with more light morning squalls forecast tomorrow.

Undersea Mountain Found 12,000 Feet Deep Near Costa Rica

Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers aboard the Horizon report a 12,192 foot high underwater mountain 10 miles wide at its base, about 7200 miles west of Acapulco. They also note a fish living in near zero oxygen zones 125 miles west of Puntarenas Costa Rica, proving deep sea adaptation exists. The discovery occurred during a three month Pacific expedition ending near Central and South America.
