Correction on the 1948-49 tax rate shows 34 cents per $100 valuation by the Metropolitan Water District instead of 24 cents. The breakdown lists 28 cents for redemptions and interest, raising $895,723.72. district taxes appear as a separate line on county tax statements for local taxpayers.
Curtis Buzzy Boettiger Roosevelt’s grandson, 18, is hospitalized in West Hollywood with poliomyelitis. He may be moved to the Corona Naval Hospital with 100 other polio patients. Doctors call the case mild but polio definite.
Mr and Mrs Benjamin F Carlin who circumnavigated the world in a converted Army amphibious truck have been rescued after ten days adrift in the Atlantic. They were picked up 270 miles from New York by the tanker New Jersey and are en route to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Carlins sailed from Boston and met in India where she served as a Red Cross nurse.
United Press reports polio in 1948 reached nearly 9,000 U S cases with more in some states. California logged 91 deaths, Texas 85, and North Carolina 83, the epidemic peaking there. Milwaukee faced a deadly outbreak as bulbar cases rose, while Rhode Island reported no cases so far.
Msgr. Luigi G. Ligutti executive secretary of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference praised thousands of European displaced persons as deserving of U S entry. He told the National Catholic Resettlement Council in New York that the United States would be lucky to welcome the displaced people from 50 camps in Germany Austria and Italy he visited recently.
