Washington reports a new record high in consumer prices with June food costs for a three person family at about 21.68 dollars compared to 10 dollars in 1935 39. The price index rose 9.7 percent from a year earlier and 3 03 times the June 1946 level. Meat and foods drove the rise while the farmer’s share stood at 51 percent of the 705 dollar annual market basket.
Detroit August 25 United Press reports GM increases hourly pay for 285 005 General Motors workers starting September 1 due to rising living costs as the Bureau of Labor Statistics index hits a new high. The contract ties a 1 cent per 11 cent rise from 169 3 base, with salaried staff receiving 25 dollar cost of living adjustments in September and additional sums through December 1. Wages are set to adjust again December 7 based on the next BLS index, with a maximum 5 cent cut during the contract. overall GM auto production wages rise to about 1 64 per hour.
