Edith McClendon a 42 year old Chula Vista jewelry dealer's wife shot herself after a seven hour stand off with police ministers neighbors and family. Deputies said she fired through a window and refused entry then returned to a bedroom where she shot herself in the head dying at Chula Vista Hospital. McClendon denied domestic troubles and her daughter Jackie 14 witnessed the events.

Danish Vessel Else Basse Burns Offshore of Newfoundland
A 260 foot Danish vessel, Else Basse, caught fire 15 miles off Cape Anguille Newfoundland. Its 25 crew and one female passenger abandoned ship, rescued five hours later by the British steamer Corner Brook. A Coast Guard Boston report said the fire began in the engine room and spread to between deck areas. An Air Force B-29 searched the scene, and the ship, weighing 1419 tons, was en route from Denmark to the United States, owned by A H Basse Co of Copenhagen.

Mossadegh Ousted Shah Called Back In Iran Crisis
London based AP reports that forces loyal to the Shah ousted Premier Mossadegh in about nine hours of street fighting. By nightfall Zahedi held central power as Mossadegh’s residence and key sites fell. At least 50 dead, hundreds wounded as Tehran radios urged the Shah’s return and Zahedi announced a new eight point reform program. The central cable office and foreign ministry fell by mid afternoon, with resistance collapsing at the police station.
