Navy Officer Faces Court Martial For POW Abuse
Lt (jg) Richard F. Gascoigne of Oceanside will be tried at a naval court-martial in San Diego on Sept. 2 on charges of mistreating fellow prisoners of war. Cascolone, a Naval Supply Corps officer, was arrested at Santa Margarita Naval Station near Oceanside May 15 for favoritism in dividing food stores and beating prisoners. Gascoigne was captured by Japan in April 1942 and served as a storekeeper at Omuta prison camp on Kyushu Island.
