A woman on Acacia Street was robbed by a legless man who exited a car, grabbed her purse, and fled toward West Rosecrans Avenue. Police investigators J A Eaimons, John Start and William Bledsie led the inquiry as details remained unclear from the damaged report.

Southern California faced a minor heat wave with warmer readings expected across most areas. Long Beach was forecast to reach about 86 degrees, four above Sunday's high, under clear skies with early fog along the coast. At least 17,000 people visited local beaches as rescues occurred near Colorado Lagoon and Alamitos Bay after two sunken sailboats. Two fishing boats were heading to Simi Pedro with 11 fishermen rescued off Baja California as the Catistac sank 100 miles offshore. The Kitty Hawk and Aggressor, from San Diego, were due to reach San Pedro Tuesday night.
Secretary of Agriculture Benson under admonition of President Eisenhower will take a three week break once Congress settles the farm legislation. aides said the President urged rest after bearing the administration’s major farm program burden. Benson and family reportedly will go to an undisclosed beach until after Labor Day.
President Eisenhower praised Guatemala for shedding interference by international communism and pledged continued aid. In White House ceremonies he welcomed new ambassadors from Guatemala and Viet Nam, noting U.S. aid to Viet Nam during wartime and offering help for peace, including reuniting areas divided by a ceasefire line.

A one year old polio patient at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital triggered a signal from her remote button at Prospect Point Niagara Falls, starting a nationwide 20 million dollar emergency drive. The blast released tons of rock into the gorge while a model iron lung and equipment were sent over the falls. Detroit police report Edith Fragher shot and killed 10 year old James D. Mackey when he dared her to fire a 22 caliber rifle through a living room window. The girl was released today into custody of her mother Beatrice Fragher says she bought the gun recently and kept it loaded to deter burglars.
A twin engine cargo plane evacuating Vietnamese refugees from Hanoi crashed in the Se Done River near Pakse in southern Laos. Fifty one or more fatalities reported include many women and children as the Civilian relief mission ends in tragedy.
Alan Tamplin, a 50 year old retiree in Birdham England, created Nellie a two barrel beer dispenser that rolls along on a deck chair path and pours drinks on demand via a radio control. Nellie holds 248 imperial pints and can also dispense soft drinks and a shandy beer.
