Navy plans and jet planes debut in 1948 era
Jet pilots with little experience off the ground fly the McDonnell all jet Phantom after 15 minutes cockpit familiarization. The Navy lighter becomes the first all jet plane to operate successfully from a carrier, boasting speeds above 500 mph and a ceiling over seven miles. The tri cycle gear eases taxiing, vibration is minimized, and one pilot praised the quiet cabin as nearly silent on flight. Personnel notes list Cmdr Hagberg to Fort Worth missile school, Navy Olympic team plans approved, and several officers assigned or reporting to ships and bases.
