Senate Defeats Move to Stall Anti Communist Labor Bill
The Senate rejected a plan by Sen. Magnuson to form a 12 member study commission on communist influence in labor. Butler argued the measure would undermine unions while Republicans and the Attorney General backed the administration backed bill to purge subversives. The House meanwhile moved toward a study commission as a parallel effort. Senator Lehman criticized the proposal as an anti union weapon and unworkable.

Air Force plans million-dollar Texas Towers off Atlantic coast
The Air Force says it will spend over a million dollars per tower for a chain of radar towers about 100 miles off the Atlantic Coast. The towers, named Texas Towers for their oil-rig look, would extend from Newfoundland to Norfolk Virginia to detect approaching bombers. Costs for 15 to 20 million dollars plus radar hardware cover platforms large enough for 20 to 30 crew with living quarters and support facilities.
