U.S. to Pay $20 Million Toward Two New Passenger Ships
The government will contribute over $20,000,000 of the $94,000,000 program to build two large passenger liners for American Export Lines at Bethlehem Shipyards in Quincy Massachusetts. Each ship costs $25,000,000 and will be 683 feet long with a 25 knot top speed, carrying 972 passengers and crews of 551. The contract aims to boost shipyards, relieve skilled-worker losses, and address tanker and ship shortages as a national defense measure.
