SAN DIEGO eight defendants in a butchers retail clerks violence trial were jailed without bail after conviction by a Superior Court jury. Judge Hewicker set Aug 27 for sentencing. Three San Diego union officials were denied 48 hour bail to handle union affairs as a receiver was planned. Convicted were Maurer Jr. and seven others from Buena Park and San Francisco, including two bodyguards hired by the union.
Two Florida women sue oil heiress Mrs. Machris in federal court claiming slander and business damages tied to a 1955 Glendale and Las Vegas affair with C Ray Gilliland. They seek one million dollars each in compensatory and punitive damages, alleging intimacy and estrangement tied to a Riverside County divorce settlement. Machris, widow of George Machris, died in 1952 leaving a fortune.
The Italian Line sued Swedish American Line for 25 million after the Andrea Doria sank following a collision with the Stockholm off the Massachusetts coast. The filing claims Stockholm crew caused the tragedy. 50 passengers remain unaccounted for with two women later found.
