Eisenhower takes grandchildren on Mount Vernon boat ride
President Eisenhower promised his grandchildren a boat trip and kept it on Monday night. The 64 foot Navy cruiser carried Ike, Mrs. Eisenhower, their children and relatives from a naval pier to George Washington’s Mount Vernon as late afternoon rain gave way to clear skies. The family, including Maj. John S. Eisenhower and Mamie Moore, enjoyed dinner and a calm voyage with the president smiling on deck during the return at 10 p.m.
