In Los Angeles a jury finds fourteen California Reds guilty in a case tied to wartime security. The verdict comes amid postwar paranoia and reflects heightened tensions of the era. Authorities praise the swift jury decision and vow to continue pursuing subversive activity.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower arrives in Los Angeles for a flying visit televised by KTTY and KTLA. A VFW parade in the Coliseum and the general’s 7 p.m. address will be shown on the stations.
General Eisenhower arrives by plane at 3 45 a m and proceeds downtown to Memorial Coliseum where he will receive during the VFW Parade of Drums. Police expect hundreds of thousands to line the streets as the motorcade moves to the Coliseum.
Washington reports Georgia governor Ellis Arnall is likely to resign with plans to present the move to President Truman, with an appointment set for tomorrow afternoon. Arnall declined to comment on the resignation while confirming the meeting and noting he aims to return to Georgia. A source said Sept. 1 would see his resignation take effect as he resumes private practice and duties.
A C-46 twin engine plane plunged 200 feet at Miami International Airport killing four aboard, including two teenage boys. Captain Robert E. Smith, 29, and co pilot John Norman Goodman, 26, were Resort Air Lines pilots. The victims from Orlando were Thomas Slaughter, 15, and Glenn Slaughter, 13. The flight was returning from overhaul with a stop in San Antonio.
In Korea, U N Sabre pilots claim air victory by shooting down four Communist jets and damaging six in aerial dogfights. The U N warned 78 towns housing military targets to evacuate before raids, aiming to spare civilians as leaflets and radio broadcasts relay notices. Civilians are urged to flee danger zones ahead of attacks as U N commands vow to destroy targets.
Aboard the Veendam in mid Atlantic Patsy Ann Partridge a pretty brunette art student vanishes after leaving a note to her parents. She was traveling from England with her family to visit relatives in New Jersey when reported missing at 6 30 a m. A seaman saw her pacing the deck in distress about three hours earlier. The family together with Harriet Partridge and others conducted a ship wide search as the vessel retraced its course and 25 ships nearby were alerted. Patsy studied at St Martin's in London and was upset over failing an exam last spring.
Fourteen California Communist leaders were found guilty of conspiring to teach and advocate violent overthrow of the U S government in a six month federal trial in Los Angeles. The defendants were led by William Schneiderman and included Phillip M Connelly and Dorothy Rosenblum Healey among others. Continued on Page A4 Col 23.

Capt Edward Shamis, 28, of Pensacola Florida, one arm shattered, made a one wheel landing with an unexploded bomb hanging from his plane after a dive bombing run near Chorwon. His wingman 2nd Lt Richard T Spencer assisted, Shamis was rushed to a hospital and has been recommended for the Bronze Star for valor.
Sacramento August 5 AP Gov Warren opposed California proposals to tap the general fund and issue bonds to finance school construction. He warned against strict monthly loan limits, urged adequacy over haste, and suggested possible loans or grants to earthquake damaged areas. He emphasized tax relief and reassessment bills to offset quake losses.
Theodore Roe a major Chicago gambling king was shot to death outside his home by unknown gunmen. Police found shell casings and tire marks behind a billboard. witnesses heard shots but unconfirmed eyewitnesses remain. Roe’s death leaves the policy racket without its longtime Chicago leader as investigators pursue leads.
President Truman voted in Missouri's Democratic primary and then flew to Washington for engagements. He refused to reveal his ballot but backed State Attorney General J. E. Taylor for the U.S. Senate nomination, citing Taylor's long support of him. Mrs. Truman accompanied him to the airport.

A young mother claims a sixth floor ledge jump was staged for publicity for Maynard H. Smith, the Medal of Honor recipient. Police charge Smith and Roland Bennett with filing false reports while Smith denies the hoax. Bennett and Whomble’s signed account describe the alleged setup.
