A San Fernando Valley task force hunted three masked gunmen after they robbed Tail o the Cock Restaurant for 51200. An exchange of gunfire with Officer R W Thomas left his car hit. The bandits fled on foot, triggering a major manhunt across homes and washes.
An Air France Constellation crashed in southwest Turkey. Air France reported 30 passengers survived, four killed, and one missing. Among the survivors was Marjorie Clark Yahyavi and her child, the only Americans aboard. Eight crew members also survived. Air France noted 27 aboard escaped without injury. In Pakistan, an Orient Airways plane carrying Mecca pilgrims crashed near Sherjah, Saudi Arabia. Twelve injured, one fatally. All pilgrims were Pakistanis.
President Eisenhower greeted Canada’s new ambassador Arnold D. P. Heeney and pledged all needed assistance to strengthen close Canada United States relations. Heeney accepted credentials noting the historically close and friendly ties between the two nations.
Unity nine Mexican nationals including nine juveniles were jailed after police pulled them from a freight train in the Los Angeles yard. Officers notified by railroad officials arrested the Wagaways aboard the train Sunday night. All were held for immigration authorities.

A 10 year old girl abducted while her father pursued the kidnapper was found two hours later. Detectives report the girl had been raped. Sammy King McSpadden of Bell was booked on suspicion of kidnapping after witnesses identified him driving off with the child.

Suspects Dion Diamond, 20, Joe Rataglia, 24, Robert Castle, 18, Robert Chavez, 23, and Duran, 18 face interfering with an officer charges. Mrs. Helene Orendorff is booked on suspicion of assault.
Reports from Berlin say Soviet tanks and troops moved to quell a hunger and travel ban revolt in East Germany. Soviet forces reportedly fired on hunger marchers in multiple cities including Cottbus and Merseburg while police clashed with demonstrators.
A four-engine KB-23 tanker, out of Bergstrom Air Force Base, crashed four miles east of Elgin Texas after entering a dive. All 12 crewmen parachuted to safety. Captain William Saunders, 28, from Chicago, was the only reported casualty and remained in a local hospital with a minor back injury.
