Plot twist in Abbott case spurs speculation of motive
In a Sunday interview Burton Abbott suggested the Berkeley kidnapping and murder could stem from an intentional act to get rid of him or an unknown motive. The 27 year old, jailed on kidnapping and murder charges, spoke after his wife found a red purse linked to the case. Police traced ownership to a Berkeley junior high girl who vanished April 28 and whose body was found July 20 near Abbott’s cabin in Wildwood. Abbott’s brother Harold said their mother Elsie is ill and with friends as investigators pursue grand jury questions about her discovery of the purse.
