White House Seeks Rail Union Peace Progress
Washington April 26 AP A major effort to settle the two year dispute between seized railroads and three big rail unions is underway at the White House with Presidential Assistant John R Steelman saying he is somewhat encouraged. Steelman, acting defense mobility mediator, has been meeting with labor and management officials for several days. The main issue is changes in four working rules affecting day to day operations and pay. Wages show tentative agreement on 37 cents for yard workers and 22.5 cents for road service. The four unions involved total about 150,000 members. the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen settled in May 1951. The rail seizure stems from a 1916 wartime law, unlike the steel seizure in 1950 under constitutional powers. Both cases face court challenges.
