Wreckage sighted of El Toro Night Fighter

Air searchers spotted wreckage believed to be from a Sky raider jet fighter from El Toro Marine Station near Camp Pendleton, 15 miles inland from San Clemente. The missing plane disappeared Friday night during a routine training flight from El Toro to El Centro, with a 3 p.m. return planned. Ground parties were organized to reach the rugged site by mid afternoon, though officials cautioned it may not be the missing aircraft. the pilot reportedly lived aboard the station.

Law to Head Reserve Fleet in Navy Shuffle

Vice Admiral Francis Law will take command of the Western Sea Frontier and the Pacific Reserve Fleet on Friday after Vice Admiral John L. Hall retires. Law, a native of Albany New York, has served as deputy chief of naval operations logistics and will oversee Pacific Reserve Fleet facilities at Long Beach Naval Shipyard, a major ship reactivating establishment. Hall, a 40 year veteran, will retire to his home in Williamsburg Virginia.

Morse Sets Senate Record With 22 Hour Speech

Sen. Wayne Morse of Oregon delivered a 22 hour 26 minute filibuster against the tidelands bill starting Friday morning and ending Saturday morning. He spoke without sitting, endured cramps, and concluded that federal revenues from tidelands should fund American schools and universities. The feat surpasses Wisconsin’s LaFollette who spoke 18 hours 23 minutes.

Senate extends rent controls to July 31

The Senate sent a bill to the White House extending rent controls to July 31 in areas already under federal regulation. About 5.6 million dwellings are affected, with roughly 4.3 million in communities voting to maintain controls and 1.3 million in critical defense growth areas. House approval came earlier. President Eisenhower is expected to sign promptly. The current control authority ends April 30, and the extension allows states and localities to act if they choose. As of Feb 18, 131 critical areas were under federal control.

Drone Guided Through Heat Wrecks During Nuclear Test

A pilotless Navy AD-2 Skyraider drone crashed near Nevada test observers after entering the thermal envelope of a spring nuclear detonation at Yucca Flats. The aircraft, heated by radioactivity, fell from a guided flight intended to avoid becoming a weapon. No immediate details on control failure. Continued on Page A-3.

Secret Flight Crash Kills Six in Long Island

A B-29 and a jet fighter collided over Great Peconic Bay near Long Island. All six crew of the bomber and the jet pilot Maj John Davis were killed. ground injuries are not reported. Names include Capt J J Vapenick and Capt H C McClanahan, Tech. Sgt John R Clarkson, and Maj Claude Chemp plus D D Shaffer.

Myrtle the mighty mouse saves lab from diamondback

In Pasadena at John Muir College a lab mouse named Myrtle killed a four-foot rattlesnake meant to be a meal for a film project. Instructor Norman H. Wakeman planned a movie stunt but Myrtle's quick bite ended the scene.

Peron Escapes Bombing At Buenos Aires Ceremony

In Buenos Aires two bombs exploded near Circulo Militar Army Club minutes apart during a portrait unveiling for Eva Peron. No casualties were reported as Peron and officials had just left the building. The club, once owned by Ezequiel Paz, sits in San Martin Square.

Link Divorcee to Big State Forgery Ring

A 41 year old San Rafael divorcee, Alice Monte, was jailed on forgery charges and linked by state authorities to a large California forgery ring. She admitted signing about 250 fictitious checks and claimed she signed only blank paper later printed as checks. Monte is the former wife of D Frank Monte, a former mayor of San Anselmo.

Fireman’s Child Dies in Flames in Artesia

James Robertson six year old son of Los Angeles County fireman died in Community Hospital from burns after gasoline ignited on a power mower at the Artesia home. Father David Robertson suffered severe burns while trying to beat out the flames. Christensen Pine Mortuary handling funeral arrangements.

Hillsborough California fire at Crystal Springs Country Club destroyed the club and caused over 70000 dollars in damages. The blaze began around midnight from unknown causes and was controlled after two hours. Two people were hospitalized after jumping from a third floor porch to escape the flames. Ignacious Broderick, the owner, was in shock and sedated. his wife suffered a fractured pelvis.

Auto overturn kills three, injures four near Bakersfield

Three people died and four young children were hurt when a speeding car overturned on Hwy. 178 near Buttonwillow. Victims were Maxine Holley, 26, her infant daughter Vickie, 6 months, and Lois Edna Akins, 27, all of McKittrick in Kern County. seriously injured were Shirley Jean Akins, 7, and Warren Glen Akins, 5, children of Lois Akins. Less seriously hurt were Rodney Holley, 6, and Michael Holley, 2, siblings of Maxine.

Army supplies kimchi to Koreans in Korea mission

National Geographic says the U S Army is supplying kimchi to South Korean troops at Pusan.
