Two Long Beach men Harry Buffum and Philip McCaughan were elected to regional executive positions at the Boy Scouts of America Region 12 Southern Section meeting in the Wilton Hotel. Buffum joins the regional board and McCaughan to the advisory committee, with Henry B. Grandin reelected regional chairman. About 500 delegates from four western states and Hawaii attended the session.
Ten oil sump holes near the Sunset Oil Co. tank farm in Norwalk are being dragged by county road employees under sheriff and juvenile officers to locate a clue in the disappearance of 11 year old Charles Houghton. The boy has been missing since noon April 12 from his Norwalk home. The search moves to the oil farm, leased to the Air Force, after tanks were combed by more than 20 officers from the case. The farm lies near the missing boy's home as the 14th day of the search begins.
Burglars pried open an office door at 115 E. Anaheim St. and stole tires valued at $500 from John W. Laughishouse owned lot. He reported the break in to police.
Earl H. Dellinger, 23, worn in a uniform kilt of the Princess Pat Regiment, was arrested after a cafe operator identified him as the man who passed a rubber check. Police say he had another check, 37, to cover, with a prior 90 day jail term ending probation.
Conversion of City College physical education facilities on the Lakewood campus starts this summer to meet rising demand for family life education. The women’s locker and shower area north of Cal Son Boulevard will house child development classrooms, with the adjacent bungalow also repurposed. Men’s locker and shower rooms will become interior decoration classrooms and two life science laboratories will support clothing and food laboratories. Permanent facilities will be shown by new building plans completing the changes.
Rain fell across Long Beach with a trace downtown and up to light to moderate amounts elsewhere. The intersection of Anaheim Street and Cherry Avenue nearly flooded. official rainfall total 7.15 inches versus 10.36 last year. Forecaster describes a weak storm from the Pacific. skies to clear tonight and Wednesday with warmer temperatures and light to variable winds.
Charles Emery Robertson, 20, of Lakewood Park, arraigned in Downes Justice Court on armed robbery charges for the holdup of Dr Victor Marron at 4356 Greenbrier Rd Lakewood early April 16. A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a m April 30. Robertson admitted part in the robbery and said a toy pistol was used. Also in custody or question are Bill Robertson 22 Martha Nell Robertson 18 Robert Wesley Best 23 and Joseph Patrick Jagan 25 with further narcotics questions pending.
Long Beach Board of Education bought a ten acre site at the northeast corner of Willow Street and Pal Verde Avenue from Zanta Homes Inc. for 65000 including streets walks curbs gutters sewers and water lines. A. A. Knoll reports plans for Emerson Elementary School are drafted to serve rapidly developing nearby residential communities.
Bixby Ranch files corporation papers with proposed capital stock of 150000 dollars. The Fred HH Bixby Ranch Co now a California corporation per county clerk records in Los Angeles. Directors named are Fred H Bixby Florence G Bixby and Preston Hotch kis of Long Beach San Marino.
Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and planning director Werner Ruchtl will oppose Lakewood Park Corporation’s plan to cut 600 feet from a 11300 foot Lakewood strip zoned for industry and develop residences. Chamber cites need to keep industrial land near rail lines as a community asset and warns homes lack nearby employment and services.
Public Schools Week activities bring 30000 adults to 35 elementary schools with tours of new buildings, spelling bees at Bret Harte Lincoln and Orthopedic, concerts at Barton Burcham Burnett, and demonstrations in speech correction sightsaving and HI tests. Senior high events include student panels talent shows and work exhibits. later days cover junior highs and City College Lakewood campus.
Long Beach voters will decide on repealing a 1937 ordinance banning fresh meat sales after 6 p.m. and on Sundays. City Council approved placing the issue on the June 5 ballot without prejudice to save election costs.
Three men arrested Sunday in a Santa Monica robbery investigation were exon erated and released today. The suspects named by police are Jack W. Graver, 20, Reed F. Blair, 21, and Joseph W. Trevorrow, 30.
The City Council rescinded the retirement pension for Capt. Sherwin W. April 17. Capt. Tubbs said a six week vacation made him realize his mistake in wanting to retire. He is 49, with 22 years of service, eligible under the old system. councilman Kealer noted the city’s investment in him and the advantage to taxpayers of his continued work.
Carl K. Gray Jr. and Adm. Joel T. Boone will hold an 8:30 AM press conference at Long Beach VA Hospital before an inspection tour. At noon they will be guests of honor at a luncheon hosted by Dr. E. V. Edwards and staff. They visit the hospital for the first time since it was transferred to the VA from the Navy last June.
Douglas A. Newcomb and Mrs. Gladys Potter received four year contracts from the Board of Education. Newcomb will earn 18000 annually and Potter 12500, up from 15000 and 11000 under the old terms. The moves come as enrollment climbs and praise for leadership comes from the salary committee and colleagues.
George R. Butters, longtime Assembly member from Brawley, lies in critical condition at St Marys Hospital after a traffic accident on the Ridge Route. His wife was killed and he sustained injuries in the collision, authorities said.
A. JOHN OLSEN, associate professor of art at Long Beach State College, was named president of the Pacific Art Association at its Seattle convention. Long Beach and Los Angeles will share sessions for the 1952 meeting, with the group comprising more than 2000 art teachers and artists across several western states. Dr Olsen, member of Long Beach Municipal Arts committee, was nominated by Southern California delegates and will visit Long Beach this week along with a noted speaker from Teachers College, Columbia University.
City Council voted pay raises for a large group of hourly workers boosting rates by 17 cents an hour with exceptions for election staff and poll checks. Daily pay rises of $1.38 apply to most employees, excluding election officials. Four new executive positions were created under a Kroeger plan to improve efficiency, including a director of finance with a $625 to $773 monthly range, a general services superintendent, and a health department administration manager, all aimed at later reducing staff after implementation.
Supervisor Herbert C. Legg says a survey is under way to help decide where the Los Cerritos Justice Court District courthouse will be located. The district would include Lakewood and parts of Bellflower, with county offices conducting the case load study and recommendations due in two to three months.

Five promotions allotted to the Beach group in the first authorization after prior freeze on enlisted promotions.
