Coal and Steel Shortages Drag Down Auto Output
The nation’s car factories secure enough steel for 100000 vehicles this week but plan to curb production amid coal and pig iron shortages. General Motors faces plant closures and up to 200000 workers may lose $12 million to $15 million in wages, with Chrysler also cutting output due to shortages. Long-term effects include delayed reopenings, a large order backlog, and delayed deliveries into 1949 as steel and coal supply issues persist.
