The day mixed joy and sorrow as mothers of released Korean War prisoners drew sympathy for their loved ones while LeRoy Meyers family welcomed twins, the second set in under a year, in Chicago. Mrs Meyer, a 23-year-old registered nurse and former World War II veteran who lost an arm in service, celebrated another birth as her twin boys reach one year old.
A Chicago woman left a five month old in front of her west side apartment and found a stray cat had given birth to five kittens in the abandoned buggy. The woman, Mrs Nesslar, quipped that being a mother five months apart is too much and apartment rules prevent keeping animals. The odd tale sits among a string of city quirks in this chaotic clipping.
Mrs Harold Forster of Albany California heard a prowler at her front door Monday night. Patrolman Glenn Thompson found a Chesapeake retriever trying to turn the knob with its teeth. The dog is in the dog pokey as the intruder was not known to the resident. Paul Egan of Aurora was elected mayor, starting at 6000 dollars a year after two weeks on unemployment compensation. He is a father of five and former weekly publisher.
County supervisors foreseen abandoning the Long Beach branch of Los Angeles County General Hospital on Willows Street as too costly, while authorizing a temporary 128 bed jail on the hospital grounds at an estimated $170,000. Hospital director Harry DuChene said the 410 bed facility is near capacity and a conversion program costing about $650,000 would be needed to meet sanitary codes.

Douglas Donald Fulpa, 24, of 1262 West 25th Street, was killed early today about 20 miles south of King City when his empty molasses semi tanker smashed through 100 feet of guard rail and plummeted 30 feet down a embankment, bursting into flames. He was thrown clear before the vehicle exploded. The truck was owned by Edward B. Wolf of Wilmington, according to the California Highway Patrol and coroner Elmer Machade.
A violent storm swept Lisbon for twenty minutes injuring 25 people and tearing roofs from houses. Heavy rains that had fallen for 48 hours ceased abruptly after the storm.

The 35 Americans join 22 British, 3 Turks, and 50 South Koreans among the 605 disabled UN and South Korean captives who landed and exchanged in a wave of sick and wounded releases. The Reds promised further exchanges, with 55 Americans to be freed in bands, as plans unfolded for Wednesday exchanges.
United Nations reporting the United States endorses Burma's demand that Chinese Nationalist guerrillas leave Burmese soil. A three point plan aims to pressure Chiang Kai shek's forces to depart, halt Burmese guerrilla clashes, and disarm and remove Chinese elements via Thailand. Lodge said Thailand agreed and Burma must control remaining bands. The U S rejected condemning the Nationalist regime as unhelpful to a peaceful settlement. George Yeh signaled co operation, aiding point one.
