Seeing-eye dogs join veteran on city walks in St Petersburg

In St Petersburg, Felix Chester, a WWI veteran who is blind, walks with two dogs. Charlie the German shepherd guides both him and the other dog, Howdy the seeing-eye boxer, who helps avoid missteps. Eisenhower Calls For Global Disarmament Move

President Eisenhower urged Russia to join a world effort to disarm and redirect war savings to human needs. Ship Afire Off Baja Calif 80 Aboard Saved

Fire swept the British freighter Menestheus seventy miles off Baja California early today. The crew of 80 abandoned ship and were rescued by the Navajo Victory which took them to safety. The cause of the blaze in the engine room remains undetermined and it was unclear if the cargo was damaged. Rescue operations were directed from Coast Guard headquarters in Long Beach.

Man leaps to death after fiery Bay Bridge crash

Navy Ltjg. Robert Roy Perryman of Lancaster Texas, 24, died after flames from a gasoline tank engulfed his car in a crash on the San Francisco Bay Bridge. Witnesses said he jumped over the railing as flames consumed him. The accident halted traffic for 45 minutes. The Coast Guard searched the bay for his body. Perryman, a 1952 UT Galveston medical graduate, was unmarried. Two cars burned, another overturned, a fourth struck a girder. several sailors were among the occupants with minor injuries.

Two Children Perish as Nursery Burns

Two fires killed at least 14 people in Chicago today with 12 bodies recovered from the Haber Screw Machine Co. factory at 864 W North Ave. Firemen were withdrawn after an explosion and collapsing walls as 30 were injured. A second blaze at a three story nursery building at 2701 N Washtenaw Ave claimed two child victims and injured four. Fire officials warned of more bodies inside and urged caution as windlashed flames hampered rescue efforts.

3 Car Crash Kills Marine Near Santa Ana

A three car collision on Highway 101 at Red Hill Avenue south east of Santa Ana killed Marine Lowell C. Montgomery, 20, Seattle, and injured seven others, including seriously injured Mrs. Ethel Sullivan, 31, and her passenger Edith C. Engelfeldt, 52. Minor injuries were reported for Thomas F. Julian, 27, and four Camp Pendleton Marines. Highway Patrol cited a boulevard stop violation by Mrs. Sullivan as the crash cause.
