Mackerel Shortage Evident In California Waters
A report from the California Division of Fish and Game shows a persistent mackerel shortage. Through April 10 landings total 42 tons of Pacific mackerel, far below 635 tons a year earlier, with jack mackerel at 4520 tons versus 12,550 tons in 1951. The agency finds no current explanation beyond cyclical population changes dating over two decades. Pacific mackerel landings peaked earlier, while jack mackerel deliveries to canneries dropped from 62,498 tons in 1950 to 43,731 tons in 1951.
