Closing L B Shipyard Cost 9 2 Million Says Navy

The Navy testified before the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee that the six month shutdown of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard cost the government 9.5 million dollars. Rear Admiral Wilson D. Leggett Jr. said long term preparedness justified keeping the Quincy Massachusetts Bethlehem yard open despite a higher bid for destroyers. The yard was deactivated June 30 1950 and reactivated February 1 1951 with a small maintenance staff. peak wartime employment reached 16 000 in 1944.

Washington reports the United States Britain and France sent identical notes to the Soviet Foreign Office. Britain pledges to keep armed forces in Europe
