AP dispatch from Panmunjom reports a landmark prisoner exchange endgame for 120 American POWs and 480 Allied captives, plus thousands of Communist troops. The six-day talks yielded a pact seen as a stepping stone to an armistice in Korea, with both sides pressing for resumed plenary talks as the exchange looms next week.
A 26 year old Ohioan, Donald Parnell of Belpre, died when his semitrailer overturned after a collision north of Sylvania, trapping him in the cab as motorists tried to help. A clergyman prayed beside the burning truck as gasoline ignited and spread flames. No other injuries reported.
Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby took the oath in the White House as the first Secretary of Health Education and Welfare. The 48 year old Democrat and former publisher from Houston headed the Women's Army Corps, and was the second woman to reach a cabinet post after Frances Perkins. She pledged public service after Federal Security Administration became a full department.
Greenwich Hospital reported a two by one foot skin graft, said to be among the largest in medical history, taken from a woman's abdomen and applied to her legs during a two hour operation. A hospital spokesman noted the graft tightened the figure and reduced abdominal folds.
In Los Angeles a quiet birthday party for 17 year old Ralph Hager was invaded by more than 100 crashers, including hot rodders and Venice High students. Police say furniture was wrecked, a refrigerator raided, and food scattered as 18 people were jailed and 15 officers restored order.
In Elizabeth Louisiana a dynamite blast ripped the gas main, forcing fuel and electricity shutoffs. The strikebound town has seen frequent dynamitings and shotgun blasts since workers at Calcasieu Paper Co and Southern Industries walked off September 8 over a contract dispute. no injuries reported.
Harold W. Weidenhammer, 28, confessed he pushed the switch on a giant cement mixer at Flint Cement Products Co, killing Ira T. Uptegraff when the machine started with him inside. He said he wanted to see the mixer run while a man was inside. police obtained a murder warrant after his confession at East Lansing.
Clarence Miller of Costa Mesa and Battle Creek says two young women, one armed, invited him for a ride north of Fullerton Municipal Airport on Imperial Highway. They stripped him to underwear, robbed him of 22.50, took his 1953 Buick with Michigan plates MIS51, and left him stranded on a lonely road before police were contacted.
An 18 year old Army private and his 24 year old sister died when their car rolled over an abutment near Alameda Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway. The brother survived with shock. the sister, Mrs Josephine Mildred Morgan of Huntington Park, died. Police say the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
The 7607 ton U S merchant ship American Judge owned by United States Lines and homeported in New York was reported to refloat herself under her own power after running aground near Rotterdam. No damage indication was noted.
In Beaumont Texas Mrs Babe Zaharias the famed woman athlete was found to have a malignant condition requiring a major operation. Doctors issued a joint statement at noon confirming a serious illness likely to end her athletic career and noting she had been hospitalized earlier in the week.
In Stillwater Minnesota a riot broke out as about 1000 inmates smashed windows and started small fires after authorities refused further negotiations on grievances. New warden Edwin Z Swenson arrived to take command amid continued unrest and reports of armed inmates.
A light single engine plane dropped two bombs on U S 10th Corps headquarters near the eastern front Saturday night causing no damage or casualties. An Eighth Army officer said there was an alert but no official report of damage. Old Red monoplanes and biplanes occasionally fly over Allied lines near Seoul dropping shells and grenades.
U S Sabre jets shot down three Communist MIGs over North Korea as Fifth Air Force said two additional MIGs were damaged. Ground combat at Texas Hill saw Chinese forces try two assaults, but South Korean defenders repelled them. Henry J. Kaiser will visit Long Beach Monday to oversee Kaiser Foundation bids for a share in the hospital program. Negotiations have been conducted by Henry Kaiser Jr. Kaiser Sr. will fly into Los Angeles and proceed to meet City Council Tuesday afternoon after staying at the Wilton Hotel.
A U S search mission launched from Albrook Air Force Base by three planes of the 26th Air Rescue Squadron to locate a small private plane missing with a California couple aboard. Mr and Mrs Lawrence Swain of Martinez were traveling from Cocumen Airport in Panama to Medellin Colombia when radio contact was lost after a Friday departure.
A Bell Telephone researcher at Case Institute of Technology’s 75th anniversary event outlined a self replicating machine concept. Claude E Shannon described an abstract model where a device gathers parts from its surroundings to build a copy, which then constructs another, ad infinitum. He noted computers differ from adding machines by memory and programmability and said such machines could play complex games and even shop for groceries, while human creativity remains superior in art and aesthetics. The speaker warned such self replicating tech is not yet in production and unlikely to yield Shakespeare or Beethoven soon.
Two armed bandits fled Herman's Liquor Store at 14147 S Paramount Blvd after taking 71 from a clerk. Everett L Herman, owner, fired at the rear of the store and later fired again as the robbers fled north on Paramount Blvd. His wife Edna May Herman, 46, assisted but was unharmed. The Hermans live at 163 Florence Ave Hollydale.
Shrieking winds Friday night brought gusts up to 45 miles per hour at Long Beach Airport and 32 miles in San Pedro, though official forecasts expect calmer speeds today and Sunday with highs in the upper 60s. Subpoenas were carried from a Long Beach police desk by a gust at the station, while temperatures hovered near 41 degrees and other area readings varied from Campo to Los Angeles.
