Southern California Edison Co extends the 5 percent or 15 dollar monthly raise to striking electrical workers retroactive to January 1. New York detectives arrested Kischel and Berman for stealing flying saucers. Kischel took 3000 dollars worth of miniature saucers from Premier Plastics Co where he once worked. some recovered at Berman’s Bronx shop. Kischel charged with grand larceny. Berman with receiving stolen goods.
Fort Wayne Indiana reports Joe De Bona failed to set a new transcontinental speed record for propeller planes after taking off from Burbank to New York. He landed in Fort Wayne shortly before 3 p m with a blown cylinder, ending the attempt.
Norwalk report on Crestelites a women’s group breaking a dam blocking a drainage ditch near their homes. Led by Mrs Jewel Frederick they plan to release three feet of stagnant water threatening 1708 nearby houses and children, following no county action for oil rights and construction debris.

U S authorities capture Winnie the crippled goose famed for a friendly gesture and deport him to Canada. Canadian officials plan to fly Winnie home while New York’s Bronx Zoo waits. Witnesses recalled a gallant effort by Winnie and two geese to lift him aloft.
Blonde 11 year old Lessie McLeod saved her 11 month old sister Susan Carol and two brothers from a burning Burlington apartment. She handed the baby to a fireman from a window, then coaxed the older children to safety as flames blocked the stairwell. Damage was estimated at about $50,000.
A dry spell continues with mostly clear skies and occasional clouds. Temperatures rise slightly in the afternoon, bringing warmer conditions across the area through Friday.
Marines clawed back to the top of Carson Hill after a pre dawn assault by Chinese forces. The exact Marines killed and wounded were censored while a relief force moved up and secured the position eight miles east of Panmunjom. B 29s bombed a Red supply dump as fighter bombers and Sabre jets patrolled MIG Alley.
The Senate finance committee unanimously approved President Eisenhower's nomination of Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby to head the new Health Education and Welfare Department. Chairman Millikin said a Senate vote on confirmation could occur Friday.
