State Help Sought on Relief Costs in California
Sacramento April 9. P County supervisors appealed to the Legislature to aid counties in paying relief costs for the unemployed. A proposed plan would have the state cover 60 percent of relief expenses in any county when relief costs exceed eight cents on the county tax rate. Counties such as Los Angeles Alameda San Diego Contra Costa Kern and Solano would be affected. The estimate would cost the state about 8 million dollars yearly, aiding county expenses. California counties with large wartime shipyards faced high relief costs as in Contra Costa. The plan was sent to a Legislature already facing budget strains as Gov Warren seeks higher taxes on cigarettes liquor horse racing and sales income and business.
