Newcastle Addresses and Petitions Debate in Gazette Tone
To the Printer of the London Evening Post Newcastle records compare a Petition against the ministerial system with respect to America and an Address from Newcastle merchants. The Petition, signed by 1210, was presented by Sir George Savile and others, while the Address, signed by 168, was carried clandestinely. The writer criticizes self styled merchants and the influence of interest versus public virtue. He questions the value of names in the Gazette and urges civic honesty.
