Profile of a controversial French ministerial appointee
The piece surveys Taleyrand-Perigord and fellow figures linked to the Directory era. It traces Taleyrand-Perigord from a troubled religious ascent through republican collaborations to leadership roles, criticizing his alleged perfidy and asserting his potential in foreign affairs. It also covers Robespierre era actors and others named in the upheaval, ending with a judgment on his suitability for the War Department.
