A reader argues for a national championship tournament during the regular season with eight pre-set games, a top 16 playoff, and a Rose Bowl final. It would eliminate mismatches, crown a national champion, and use computer or committee scheduling for the remaining games.
Lompoc Braves fumbled three times and botched three PATs in a 20 18 loss to St. Bernard Vikings. Jim Huyck led a late rally but a dropped two point conversion at 4:15 left sealed the outcome for the CIF 2 A ranked Vikes.
The Lompoc Braves slimly trailed 13 12 entering the final period before a late rally. Ted Heath Garife and Huyck fueled a 68 yard drive with a 29 yard pass and a 14 yard keeper. St Bernard answered, but a pivotal tipped pass and field position kept the Vikes ahead.
Cincinnati's 15-10 win over Pittsburgh boosted the Bengals to 2-0, led by Horst Muhlmann's five field goals and a stout defense. They host founder Cleveland Browns as Miami and Minnesota loom as strong 2-0 rivals in early season context.
Carl Yastrzemski hit a two run homer in the 10th for Boston as Baltimore fell 4-2. Tiant pitched seven innings, Boog Powell homered, and Detroit beat Milwaukee 12-5 to stay in the AL East chase. Kansas City beat Oakland 9-2, Mayberry drove in four for the Royals, and Chicago topped Texas 5-1. Minnesota at California in West Coast action.
Righetti High School of Santa Maria defeated Santa Ynez 31-12 led by senior tailback David Amido who opened with an 87 yard kickoff return and scored on a 63 yard pass. Amido totaled 74 rushing yards and 98 receiving yards. Santa Ynez QB Martin Milan was limited as Righetti intercepted eight passes. In a separate game Santa Maria beat Foothill Bakersfield 13-0 on two first quarter TDs by Mike Draper.
Tom Seaver pitched a two hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Mets beat the Pirates 1-0. Agee's ninth inning bloop single drove Wayne Garrett home after Boswell moved him to third on a sacrifice. Clemente collected his 2,999th hit but came up short in his bid for 3,000.
