Lompoc Transit patronage falls during free ride trial

Gas station attendant outfoxes would be robber

Donald J. Walls a 23 year old Buellton gas station attendant told Solvang deputies a robber arrived about 4 am and used a switchblade to demand 100 dollars after paying for 6.05 dollars of gas. Walls slammed the cash box sprayed the robber with gasoline and brandished a lighter causing the suspect to flee without the money.

Smith blames Soviets for rule rejection

Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith accused the Communists of pulling strings after black African nations rejected a proposed five nation conference on Rhodesia. The leaders of Angola Botswana Mozambique Tanzania and Zambia demanded Britain organize a conference excluding the Smith regime to chart a path to black majority rule within two years. Britain offered to arrange a constitutional conference in London.

Kissinger aide predicts Rhodesia rule acceptance by leaders

A State Department official said five front line African presidents Botswana Angola Zambia Mozambique and Tanzania have accepted the negotiating package on Rhodesia with caveats to be discussed at the constitutional conference. He noted no preconditions but said crucial points must be reopened for bargaining. The leaders had previously opposed the plan as proposed by Rhodesia’s Ian Smith.
