Firestorms Driven by Santa Ana Winds Across Southern California
High Santa Ana winds gusting to 90 mph sparked 13 brush fires in four counties. A 5,000 acre Ventura County fire roared toward the sea while smoke rose hundreds of feet and reached Palos Verdes. Firefighters saved Broome ranch but a Navy relay station was overrun. seven miles of Pacific Coast Highway were closed as winds raged across Los Angeles and Malibu areas.
