Lompoc Hobbyist Turns Rock Paper Into Regional Reach

In 1972 Lester Gideon launched Rock Hobby Times a six issue tabloid now with worldwide circulation from Taiwan to England. The Gideon family runs editing layout and mailing while staff includes son Jerry John Judy and a local student. The paper bills $2 yearly for paid subscribers and covers promotions, shows and equipment reviews.

Chingo faces Santa Barbara court on fatal DUI charges

Paul Joseph Chingo 18 of 917 W Apple Ave is due in Santa Barbara Municipal Court October 1 on felony drunk driving and manslaughter counts from the August 9 crash on Santa Ynez River Road near Los Prietos Boys Camp that killed a Wyoming man. He pleaded not guilty at September 20 arraignment and is free on his own recognizance pending a preliminary hearing.

Yom Kippur Observance Begins at Sundown Tomorrow

Temple Beth El in Santa Maria will host Yom Kippur Eve services at 8 p.m. tomorrow led by Student Rabbi Rosalind Gold, followed by Day services at 10 a.m. Thursday. The fast marks the Day of Atonement observed worldwide for over two thousand years, ending at sundown Thursday with the Shofar blast.

Rabies Suppression Program Approved by County Supervisors

Juvenile Court Hearing Delayed in Etheridge Slaying

The hearing for Owen Gerry Etheridge 16 facing a charge in the Aug 27 killing of Roscoe Owens Etheridge in Lompoc was moved from today to Oct 1. A source close to the case indicated the proceedings will likely stay in juvenile court.

Board deadlocks over civil service status for assistants

The Board of Supervisors split 2-2 on whether county assistant district attorneys should be exempt from Civil Service protections. District Attorney elect Stan Roden said staff will be let go next January, while Sperry and Minier argued for Civil Service coverage. The board postponed further analysis and moved to a case by case basis, with Catterlin abstaining due to future employment considerations.

Funeral services held for Mrs Nancy E Hixon 66

Funeral services for Nancy E Hixon 66 will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Gregory and McPeek Mortuary Chapel. She died Sunday at Hospital and will be interred at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. Reverend Charles Stifle will officiate. Survivors include her husband Joseph, a son Richard, and two daughters Judith Nelson and Nancy Gingell.

Woman scarred in head on collision near Goleta

A two car head on crash on Highway 101 near Winchester Canyon Road last night left Richard James Reiner with a broken foot and burns and Dorothy C. Robeson jailed on felony drunk driving charges after the Goleta collision. Reiner, 21, was treated and released from Goleta Valley Hospital. Robeson, 68, drove north in the southbound lanes and faced major injuries and legal action.
