Welfare costs surge 27 percent with relief rolls rising
HEW reports total welfare costs for the year ending June 30 at 16.3 billion dollars and relief rolls at 14.3 million. From 1968 to 1971 welfare costs climbed from 8.9 to 12.9 billion, while average monthly aid rose from 47.20 to 49.30 dollars. Eleven states tightened eligibility, cutting aid in belt-tightening measures.

Army to switch to quarterly draft calls
