Pentagon eyes October draft resumption amid low calls
Pentagon officials announced the draft would resume in October 1971 while expecting low conscription calls for the rest of the year. Long bargaining in dock strike stalls West Coast ports
In San Francisco negotiators from the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union met for over seven hours in one of the longest bargaining sessions aimed at ending the dock strike. No progress comments were offered as talks continued with another session planned. The strike idled about 190 ships across 24 ports and 15,000 longshoremen. Meanwhile draft officials forecast a October draft call with first inductees possible within two weeks after the president signs the bill.
