Groundwater Nitrogen Rise Tied to Agriculture in Santa Maria Valley
A US Geological Survey study finds groundwater in the Santa Maria Valley worsened over two decades due to agricultural fertilizer use and declining recharge. Nitrogen levels reach up to 30 mg/L in some areas, with most aquifers above 10 mg/L. Recharge has lagged pumping by about 10,000 acre feet yearly since 1930. The report suggests maximizing existing supplies or importing from the State Water Project if quality improves, with Phase I options projecting 90,000 acre feet per year in 1980 rising to 142,000 by 2000, while demand grows to about 117,500 by 2000.
