Valley Witnesses First Mechanical Grape Harvest in Santa Ynez
The Santa Ynez Valley sees the debut of a six ton hydraulic mechanical harvester from Upright Harvest Co. It is jointly owned by Vina de Santa Ynez, Boyd Bettencourt, G. Gifford Davidge, and Dean Brown with Lance Brown and Louis Ream. The machine operates at La Mesa Zaca Ranch and Foxen Canyon Road, replacing hand picking for about 400 acres. It can harvest one acre per hour, cutting costs from 75 to 56 dollars per ton, and works day and night in temperatures under 72 degrees. It requires a four person crew plus operator and quality control, and promises future expansion despite initial high cost.
