Bribery Trial Date Set for Navarro in Santa Barbara

The bribery trial of Raul Navarro 36 suspended administrative aide to Board of Supervisors Chairman Charles F Catterlin will begin Oct 10 in Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Floyd Dodson set the date and assigned Judge Joh Westwick Navarro free on 1000 bond Navarro accused of soliciting a bribe from Cal Pac Recreational Inc which seeks to expand Zaca Lake facilities Navarro claims the 1000 was a political donation to the Flournoy for Governor campaign.

Wavy mer thwarted show dog theft in Village

In a village incident a thief tried to steal two AKC registered show dogs from Gray of 3926 Saturn Ave. A white 1969 or 1970 twin truck linked to the suspect was seen near Safeway. Gray chased and struck the suspect, freeing the dogs, who escaped into a truck and fled as officers search for the vehicle and thief.

Ellwood pier bid eyed as county seeks funds

The County Park Commission with Santa Barbara Sports Fishermen seeks state and federal aid to acquire and develop the former Signal Oil Ellwood pier for county recreation. Chairman Hal Bruington says the project would cost about 998000 with 277000 local need and 775000 spill settlement funds already received.

Exxon faced strong support and sharp criticism at a day-long environmental hearing on its 26 million onshore oil and gas processing and storage project in Refugio Canyon. The session, continued to Oct 17, weighed tourism impact, air pollution, and economic gains from tax revenue and jobs while opponents urged rejection and industry backers touted energy and local benefits.

County official warns limited oversight on Exxon onshore plant

County Petroleum Administrator Joseph Green told a Las Flores Canyon hearing that his office would have only limited surveillance of Exxon Co. onshore oil and gas processing facilities near Refugio. He said stronger county oil controls would come with a revived ordinance next year, following a 3-2 vote to table the measure last spring. Green noted the plan depends on a new county oil code, and expressed sympathy for keeping Santa Barbara Channel oil in reserve for emergencies.

Minier defends office actions on intoxicated driving cases

District Attorney David D. Minier defended his office by citing routine leniency after reducing an intoxicated driving charge against an aide to reckless driving. He noted Stan Roden’s secretary was fined $150 in a similar case and announced the resignation of Deputy Walter Matthews. Roden’s law partner Jerry Whatley sought to vacate about 30 convictions based on Begg’s leniency. motion set for Monday in Santa Barbara Municipal Court.
