Senate panel clears $142 billion highway bill with mass transit aid
The Senate Banking Committee approved a $142 billion highway program for 1974 and 1975 and attached a transit package. The plan would allow road funds to be used for buses and trains, add $3 billion for public transport equipment, guarantee $800 million in subsidies for 1973-74 transit operations, and apply the 90-10 federal formula to mass transit. Senator Harrison Williams Jr. called it a turning point in shifting from road building to public transit. The full bill now goes to the Senate floor on a 10-0 vote.
