Kissinger awaits African invitation for Rhodesia talks
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said he is prepared to travel to Africa next week to press for a peaceful settlement in Rhodesia and South West Africa but awaits a formal invitation from African leaders after a summit in Dar es Salaam. A senior U.S. official said Tanzania offered an invitation and Kissinger would depart no later than Monday if conditions allow.

Soviet Mig25 defector Viktor Belenko lands in Japan for US asylum
1st Lt Viktor Belenko, 29, defected with the Mig25 Foxbat and landed in Hakodate. He was flown secretly to Tokyo and will proceed to the United States for political asylum with White House approval from President Ford after NSC consultation. Japanese authorities refused an immediate return of the aircraft and coordinated the move from Chitose to a Tokyo base before release. Kyodo reported Belenko was sheltered in a Tokyo area hideout awaiting onward flight. Foreign Minister Miyazawa cited humanitarian reasons and said the U.S. was notified.

Four youths were injured with two serious after a car ran a boulevard stop sign north of Lompoc. Victims include David Luke Vickers 17 and three passengers from Mission Hills and Vandenberg Village. Police report the crash around 3 40 p m and a marijuana seizure followed at the scene.

Labor Day highway toll soars to 526 deaths
