Police placed East Germany's Olympic squad under heavy guard in Munich amid telephoned threats from alleged Palestinian groups. Fifteen armed guerrillas wanted after an earlier attack on the Olympic Village remain at large, with further violence and deaths reported among Israelis during the Munich Games.
Rev Billy Graham, 53, spoke calmly at a Santa Barbara news conference before a Channel Club speech. He warned of a growing demon power and occult influence while noting a possible global spiritual awakening, commented on Nixon and Vietnam, and praised China ethics before predicting Africa’s Christian future and Munich as possibly the last free Olympics.
American Rod Milburn, from Opelousas Louisiana, captures the high hurdles gold at Munich equalling the world record and setting an Olympic mark with a 13.2 second run. France’s Guy Cruz takes silver as Tom Hill edges Willie Davenport for bronze.
Egypt becomes the first Arab state to hold West German authorities responsible for the Munich hostage crisis. Lebanon and Jordan express sorrow, while Cairo calls for a protest and a German ambassador clarification. Palestinian outlets in Cairo praise the guerrillas and condemn the West German handling.
At Geneva the 25 nation disarmament conference closed its 1972 session with the United States and Soviet Union blocked on banning all nuclear tests. Soviet negotiator Alexei Roschin blamed western states for the stalemate and urged broader political will to reach a comprehensive treaty.
A two year old Lompoc girl Debra Lucille Moore of 802 E Airport Ave died after being struck by a pickup driven by 51 year old Joe Alvin Machado on North A Street near Airport Ave. The child ran from between parked cars into the path of the truck and was dragged briefly. Funeral services were pending.
Ten sportsmen killed by Arab guerrillas in Munich are brought home in coffins as mourners including cabinet ministers, diplomats, church leaders, and Israelis pay their respects. Israeli forces report night infiltrator killings, and Deputy Prime Minister Allon urges accountability of Arab states. David Berger 28, an 11th victim, was flown from Munich to Cleveland, Ohio.
Masked gunmen opened fire at the Fountain Valley Golf Course clubhouse killing eight instantly and injuring three as they fled into the hills. Police and guards staged an island wide manhunt with reinforcements arriving from St Thomas and Puerto Rico.
